Common causes of hair fall (and when to see a doctor)
Question: What causes hair fall in men and women?

Short answer: the most common causes are genetics (pattern hair loss), stress or illness, nutrition gaps such as low iron, hormonal changes, and harsh styling. A dermatologist can tell which one applies to you.
1. Genetics
Pattern hair loss runs in families. In men it usually shows as a receding hairline or thinning crown. In women it often shows as a widening parting.
2. Stress, illness and big life events
A high fever, dengue, surgery, a stressful exam season or a new baby can trigger noticeable shedding a few months later. This type often settles by itself.
3. Nutrition
Low iron, low vitamin D and not enough protein are common in Pakistan and can affect hair. Don't self-prescribe supplements; a simple blood test tells you what you actually need.
4. Hormones and thyroid
Thyroid problems, PCOS and hormonal shifts after pregnancy can all show up as hair changes.
5. Styling and pulling
Tight ponytails, buns under a hijab every day, frequent straightening and chemical treatments can damage hair and the hairline over time.
When to see a doctor quickly
- Round, smooth bald patches
- Hair coming out in clumps
- Painful, red or scaly scalp
- Hair loss with weight change, tiredness or irregular periods
Where a scalp routine fits
A good routine keeps the scalp clean and cared for and is designed to support healthier, fuller-looking hair. It works best alongside medical advice when there is an underlying cause.
